Im having a hard time gathering the fundage needed for starting my PPL. I dont want to give up but I cant go out and get a loan for it. Ive been wanting this so many years. All my money has to go into my video business which should pay off in the year or so but I still feel discouraged. I read all the pilot magazines but I really dont know where to even start. I am afraid I'll give up on something that I wanted so badly.

Re: discouraged getting my PPL
Tue, June 7, 2005 - 3:27 PMIn the mean time you could either study for your written exam. You could also practice on a flight simulator like MS or Xplane. Although they are more sensitive than real planes your can develop a touch and some what a feel for flying. This may cut down on the time you will need to get your PPL. -

Re: discouraged getting my PPL
Tue, June 7, 2005 - 4:49 PMWhy not fly whenever you can afford it... once a month... no matter how long it takes for your ppl... you're still flying... even if it takes you a zillion hours, and years.... fly w/cfi every now and then, just for the love of it and slowly build your hours while you study along the way. why not, it's good for your soul.
Also, find a pilot/friend you can fly with, share cost (they'll appreciate that), and enjoy the enviroment as you learn from another pilot.
sallie mae/career loans saved my day... they have loans that go all the way up through CFI...

Re: discouraged getting my PPL
Tue, November 14, 2006 - 9:31 AMHi Goth... I feel for you... flying is $$$... the sim is a great idea... I want to get one myself to stay sharp on instruments... I hear you can fly into all the airports on the inst approaches. Great practice... check out CH Products for all of the sims available and also the yoke (rather than the stick).
for your books and stuff, there are several... I use ASA www.asa2fly.com/ they have the books, test prep, exam guide, DVDs, ground shcool... you name it... all very good.
never stop dreaming about flying... it took me 35 years of dreaming until I started and got my PPL... 3 1/2 yrs ago.... learning in LA teaches you about airspace and the radios right from the beginning too. That's a plus...
it's magical... you'll love it... if you want to go flying sometime... be my guest and we'll fly to Camarillo for lunch... -

Re: discouraged getting my PPL
Tue, September 13, 2005 - 10:07 AMI've beena private pilot for a while now and I got a chance to try out an ultralight when I was on vacation...
All I can say is ultralights are better than 'real' planes.
Mind you, I'm the sort of pilot who doesn't care about getting from point a to point b, I love slow flight and I could do touch and goes all day long. I also prefer motorcycles to cars. In short, your mileage may vary.
Still, to me ultralights capture the feeling I was hoping for when I got my PPL, where you spend your time flying instead of managing the aircraft. -

Re: discouraged getting my PPL
Tue, September 13, 2005 - 11:12 AMThey are great, best one I had was a Robertson B1RD, taildragger, three axis control, fun little bird. You can find some older one that need a little TLC for a very good price too. It's normally easy to find someone that will share the cost of a hanger, our just get a trailer and drag it home. I was always to lazy for that, but a cheap way to go. And the cost of gas now it is alot cheaper. I am not really in the point a to point b stuff, although I have taken some 400 miles trips with some friends. Went from Redding to the Airlinton airshow once. I have a 1943 Taylorcraft L2M resto project right now, but it's going to take another couple of years to finish, at least the A65 engine is good on fuel as well. Good luck with the flying -

Re: discouraged getting my PPL
Thu, November 9, 2006 - 6:57 AMKeep at it!
In getting mine over the course of 1.5 years out of KAGC with then Phoenix Aviation in 1992, I can say you just have to want it badly enough and you'll find a way.
For my own part, I was working a junior-level software engineer for a not-great-paying company and had a lot of debt yet to pay off. So... to get my PPL, I literally sold everything I had, including my mountain bike, my CD collection, climbing gear, backpacking gear, ... and picked up a second job in order to scratch my way through the hours.
I got through it, and every minute of flight in the endless blue thereafter I knew it was the best gift I ever gave myself.
Good luck & godspeed,

Goth? Maybe you could pick up a lesson at the BRC airport next year. There's a few flight instructors that fly in. Barter for it!
