Hey pilots!
For my 40th b-day I've decided to gift myself with flying lessons... something I've
wanted to do for over 20 years (about time, no?). My question: How does one
rate flight instructors/schools? Aside from meeting someone in person and seeing
if you "vibe", are there other criteria I should be aware of? Is there a guide to
schools or anything?
And finally, can anyone recommend a place/instructor in LA. I live near the Santa
Monica airport, but will go anywhere within an hour if its worth it...
Thanks!
Loki

Re: Flight school in LA??
Sat, September 29, 2007 - 12:16 PMThe "Vibe" with your CFI is most of it when it comes to learning... do check out some options too.... It's always nice to live/work/train/fly close by... Santa Monica (SMO) is great... It would be a good airport to fly out of though saying that, the marine layer will dictate your training schedule... I learned at Van Nuys (VNY) and now fly out of Whiteman (WHP) ( www.airnav.com/airport/KWHP ). You'll find better prices on planes and CFI's from either Vista ( www.vistaair.com/ ) or Sunquest ( www.flysunquest.com ) at Whiteman.... But, there is A LOT to say about keeping it close to home or work... I live in Studio City, so Whiteman works for me... I got my Instrument rating at Vista and enjoy the people there and next door at Sunquest very much.... enjoy every minute flying, we're some of the lucky ones.... -

Re: Flight school in LA??
Fri, January 18, 2008 - 8:47 PMHey Loki, not sure if you have started yet - but I got certified out of Blue Skies at Van Nuys in 2002 and they were great. Agree with the post about the marine layer, however staying close to home is fun. If you don't plan on doing it in June, you should be okay in SM.
Good luck!
