Alright, after investing all the time and money to get my PPL in 2002, I did what I always said I would NEVER do - I let my license lapse. Grad school dug into the funds I used to set aside for flying, and then I joined the world of International Aid workers in Iraq and Afghanistan where flying yourself around Baghdad or Kabul International is generally frowned upon.

So, this year I have vowed to renew my license, but have a few questions:
1. Is my ticket "expired" or has it just lapsed - i.e., do I have to take another test, or just do medical and checkout ride with a couple hours to get current?
2. My license is safely stowed in a safety deposit box in the US - how hard is it to get a replacement?
3. I am planning on doing the medical and necessary training while on vacation in my home country of South Africa (which has a huge flying culture, if you've ever flown into a war zone, chances are, the pilots are South African) - is this valid on a US license?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated...being shuttled around in black hawks and C-130s in Iraq, and now frequently flying over the Hindu Kush mountains have made me desperate to head to the skies again.

Great group Mark, glad I found it.
Happy Flying!
rate flight instructors/schools? Aside from meeting someone in person and seeing
if you "vibe", are there other criteria I should be aware of? Is there a guide to
schools or anything?

Hey guys, new here and terrible at introductions, I'll jump right into it. I'm putting together some investment money and should have enough in about 12 months to get a good kit plane.

I'm looking around at different kits, planes, designs, etc. The wing type that fits my mission objective of wilderness camping and someday, (eventually) a backyard strip, Is definitely a fixed-slat high-lift STOL type. I've looked long and hard at the CH701. I love what it is and what it does, but it's just so dang ugly. My wife is in love with the kitfoxes and I'd have a hard time passing a bill through her 2/3's of our congressional decisions, on a toy that she doesn't like. That, and it is pretty much tricycle-only gear. I've seen conventional gear on them and they really don't look right at all. I like tailwheels, but I don't want to sacrifice twice as much visibility as I need to during taxi, trying to use a plane that was clearly designed around the tricycle-only, very high-tail concept.

Does anybody know some planes out there with the fixed-slat STOL wing, but maybe more of a kitfox body? or at least something that doesn't look like a 701 hockey stick with wings when you put it down on a tail wheel?

There was a man, a young man of good heart and character, and he had a bus that he loved. The bus was the shiny yellow and black apple of his eye, and their love was complete. He veritably lived inside of her, caressing her ample bumpers and buying her all manners of distilled waters and fancy spray paints.

And she loved him too; she loved him as strongly as a bus could love a man, that tall (10 feet) long legged (35 feet) 19,000 lb lady from Hayward, and things were good.

She was a comely bus, old fashioned values and smog, and was blessed by the lord with the gift of turbo, a lovely tress of curly cast iron that adorned her intake manifiold like a jewel in a Princess' tiara. It was their pride and her joy.

And the man also possessed one thing of great sentimental and personal value: a classic turbo boost sphygomometer given to him by his grandfather, a toxic filled graduated glass and brass mercury tube of wonderful complexity that he would lovingly plumb into his beloved when he wanted to see her smile. On sundays they would go to the park and he would gently lift her covers one by one, and there they would sit, whiling away the hours in the joy that only lovers share.

The couple was poor, and didn't drink the finest Rotella, nor could afford Michelins on the table except during special occasions. And then one year, the Saint Valentine's Day holiday approached, and they were both left in a quandary, how could this poor bus and man properly show their love on this special occasion?

Finally February 14th arrived, and after a hard day at the yard, the man came home to find his beloved bride sitting, parked near the one ton, behind the trailer, near the stack of pallets where he stored the brake drums and the power steering pumps, with tears/condensation in her headlights, but still shining the most lumenous of glows towards her chosen seat taker. And the man excitedly approached her, cleverly concealing a package from his beloved's low beams.

(break for commercial)

(Scene returns to idyllic backyard full of bus parts and Japanese and American pickups)

"Look my dear" he cried, "I have the finest of gifts for the bus that has been my veritable foundation of transportation for so many wonderful years." And from under his cloak, he produced a box. And there, inside the box was a lovely air heat exchanger from Cummins in Paris, painted beautiful flat black and glowing with a non reflective dullness that shone like the night. (with all necessary connectors and fasteners, and a roll of pink teflon tape)

"Oh my Goodness", she screamed in joy, "how could you ever have brought to me such a precious and costly gift my love?" She began to sigh, and with tears now welling up in her turn signals, she said "We are but a poor couple, rich in maintenance but with a limited parts budget..."

"Well" he replied, "my love for you springs internal, just like your fuel lines, and I confess I sold the turbo boost gage to get the lovely part. but it is OK, we can do it by ear my sweet, love can conquer any vaccuum problem."

And then he spotted a splendidly wrapped box sitting on the dash. "Is that for me my love?" he asked. "A gift from the bus whose broad hips and leaf spring suspension has seen me thru my longest travels and darkest hours... I can't wait to open it!"

He carefully separated the twine, removed the paper, and gently lifted the lid off the box. And there inside was a 3/16" thru 7/8" SAE and metric adapter set for classic sphygamometers, lovingly hand chromed from Taiwan.

And then tears began to well up in his eyes, as he walked, slowly, to the side (driver's side, door behind the radiator door) of his beloved, and lifted her skirts gently for the thousandth time.

For he knew the truth already........ . . . there in place of her lovely turbo was a simple metal plate, her chestnut colored curl now nothing more than a 5 X 8 piece of aluminum or cast or pot metal or something, (it had paint on it) and her flowing manifolds had been shorn to the scalp.

And as they looked at each other, and felt the love and tender mercies that only a long time committed driver and machine can hold dear, and nurture thru the years,-- there was peace, and then they drove, hand in wheel, down to Flying J for a quiet, intimate fill.

And life was good, and love had flourished and flew and soared for a brief minute on God's Green Earth.

Now I'm back in Australia, I'm going to get my licence re-validated. It will literally be like starting over again - the only difference, is that I'm not on a Student licence anymore. I've got 140 hours under my belt and was endorsed to fly VFR.

I took an initial flight some months back and I remembered all the basic moves & skills. Although the radio procedures will need to re-learnt.

I was wondering if anyone else out there had taken a very long break from flying and how you coped with re-learning how to fly again.

I plan on several visits, but I’d like to do some preliminary research beforehand. If there are any pilots in the general area of Philadelphia, a little insight would be forever appreciated.

- Which FBOs have the best reputation?

- Are there any FBOs with a moderate to large fleet of Cessna trainers, i.e. 172s?

- Are any of them Cessna Pilot Centers?
- Anything else I should know about the area’s aviation community?
I'm not sure if I'll have my CFI by the time I get out there (that's the plan), but if I don't, I'd like to find an FBO that I can train and then eventually work at. Thank you so much for any help! I'll owe you cookies or something.

I tell you, I have to force myself to use maps once in a while just to keep my pilotage skills sharp; but I just keep asking why. With all of the air space and TFR's I can't see flying without one. A GPS should be required equipment on any cross country for new or old pilots.

I find that there are a lot of first timers and old timers who fly them and I was wondering if there is anyone but me out there with Ercoupe experience. I current have a buddy who owns one with and one without rudders. They are a blast to fly especially if you like to fly low and slow (100 mph). The plane is talked about in Stick and Rudder as the next step for planes but alas it never came to be. There are a bunch out there and they are the best bang for the buck as far as flying goes. You can find several sites on the internet to fill in the details. I will tell you for a fact that a 25 mph cross wind is nothing to fret about in an Ercoupe. So what are your stories?

Today I took advantage of a short break in the foggy hazy cloudy drizzly weather to do a little flying, a short hop from from Fresno to Tulare. When I taxied onto the runway at Tulare for departure, a huge flock of birds (crows, I think) suddenly appeared over and around the runway. A hundred of them at least. I sat there at the end of the runway watching these birds circle and land and take off and land again and generally stay RIGHT IN MY FRIGGIN' WAY. It was at least five minutes before they decided to go somewhere else.

Anyone else have a Hitchcock (or Twilight Zone) moment while flying?
